Students redesign iconic PURE radio

PURE showcases winning designs at Saint Martins College of Art & Design

London, UK 1st July 2010: PURE, the world-leading radio maker, unveils the winners of its radio design competition held for students at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design.

With the aim of inspiring young people in the arena of product design, PURE invited Second Year Textile Design students to design a limited edition version of PURE's iconic EVOKE Mio aimed at women. Entries were submitted in three categories: Innovation, commercial and packaging. Designs were judged by Rob Hennessy, audio buyer, John Lewis; Ellie Tennant, deputy shopping editor, Ideal Home; David Nicholls, design editor, The Daily Telegraph and Colin Crawford, PURE's director of marketing.

Colin Crawford, PURE's director of marketing says: "PURE has a long-standing heritage of producing iconic designs from the EVOKE-1, which most people associate with digital radio to the futuristic 'radio for the Facebook generation', Sensia. With this in mind, we were particularly keen to inspire young people in the arena of product design."

Says David Nicholls, design editor of the The Daily Telegraph: "I was really impressed by all the students' designs, but especially by Kalia Cox's customisable ceramic radio design which is really current and would be incredibly desirable if it was ever put into production."

Rob Hennessy, audio buyer, John Lewis says: "John Lewis is always keen to support young people and enterprise so I jumped at the chance to judge PURE's radio design competition. The standard was really high and I could certainly see one or two of the designs gracing the shelves of John Lewis in the future."

Says Ellie Tennant, deputy shopping editor, Ideal Home magazine and the HomeShoppingSpy blog: "Ideal Home is always on the look out for the designers of tomorrow and this competition shows that there is a lot of talent out there – it was very difficult to choose a favourite with such a fantastic selection of entries. Women are sometimes overlooked by consumer electronics manufacturers when it comes to product design, despite the fact that it's often women who make the big decisions when shopping for the home. It's great that PURE is addressing this by inviting young, creative people to submit exciting new design ideas for radios. I found all of the designs very refreshing."

Olivia Clifford and Abigale Hartley are joint winners of the commercial category. Olivia's designs are a selection of sophisticated silk prints while Abigale designed an EVOKE Mio around the theme of a picnic hamper. Runners up are Grace Taylor's laser cut bamboo radio and Catherine Osborn's 'handbag radio'.
The innovation category was won by Kalia Cox who designed a ceramic radio which can be personalised with embroidery and also contain LEDs which come on when the radio's integrated rechargeable battery is fully charged and then go off one by one as the battery runs down. Runners up in that category are Caleen Ladki's 'soundwave radio' which changes colour with sound and Cherica Haye's tote inspired solar active radio.

Kalia Cox also won the packaging category with her laser cut wooden packaging which matches her radio design. Olivia Clifford was also a double winner coming second with her minimalistic carton design and Julia Petges' innovative packaging that doubles up as a hammock came third.

Other radio designs that stood out includes a 'grow your own crystal radio' by Carol Pau; a 'bouncy radio for clumsy customers' made out of woven, colourful rubber bands by Olivia Hearn; a lavender coloured 'pin cushion radio for forgetful customers' by Camilla Ellis, a stretchy case to store items such as an iPod or book by Alexandra Hadjikyriacou, a radio skin woven out of cassette tapes and vinyl records by Ailiara Berdyyeva and a 'scratch 'n' sniff radio' by Charlotte Goodman.
