COMPUTEX has now become the largest computer exhibition in Asia and among the largest in the world. Each year, key global businesses come to this event to launch new products, and COMPUTEX 2013 was no exception. This year companies such as Acer, Asus, MSI, Samsung and ZTE revealed what the future will bring for personal computing.

During the show, DIGITIMES organized the CE Summit, a one day seminar where Amit Rohatgi, VP of Segment Marketing for Imagination, presented ‘Cool Matters: An Equation for Low-power Mobile SoCs’. His keynote focused on how Imagination provides unrivalled solutions by designing hardware IP with a system-optimized approach. This allows us to reduce power consumption and improve performance for all our key technologies, including PowerVR graphics and video, MIPS CPUs or Ensigma radio processors.

Attendees were given examples of how, by using Imagination’s best-in-class IP blocks, our partners lay the foundation of low power designs in mobile and embedded SoCs for tomorrow’s increasingly connected, media-rich world.

Beyond keynotes and presentations, COMPUTEX 2013 was mostly about amazing, new products. On that front, we were very happy to see a wide range of announcements, both from our silicon partners as well as major OEM brands.

Broadcom launches new smart solutions for the connected home

At the heart of the ‘smart’ revolution in consumer electronics, Broadcom designs MIPS-based 32-bit and 64-bit processors for multimedia and connectivity applications. Thanks to the flexibility of the MIPS32 and MIPS64 instruction set architectures, Broadcom is able to deliver a broad range of fully-featured products that offer industry-leading levels of performance efficiency.

Throughout COMPUTEX 2013, Broadcom made several announcements of new MIPS-based products that are due to go into volume production within the next year.

BCM616xx: an SoC for small cell baseband processors

The new BCM616xx series will be deployed in ZTE’s ZXSDR BS8001 U2100 access points, accelerating the deployment of small cell end-to-end support for growing residential mobile data traffic. This solution reduces power consumption, size and cost of installation, while achieving HSPA+ data speeds.

BCM7145: the world’s first 1.6 Gigabit hybrid video cable gateway SoC

Broadcom’s new BCM7145 SoC is an innovative set-top box gateway chip design and is a key enabler for an all-IP cable platform. According to Broadcom, “The BCM7145 is engineered with industry-leading features such as a dual-core CPU that supports multiple applications running simultaneously in secure memory containers which prevents compromises to system security while optimizing the use the CPU’s very high-performance resources, including a MIPS32 based MoCA 2.0 off-load engine.”

BCM60500 and BCM60333: a brand new family of HomePlug AV2 devices

HomePlug defines a set of specifications for various power line communications to support networking over existing home electrical wiring. HomePlug AV2 brings new features to HomePlug AV that provides significant increases in throughput and coverage performance.

Broadcom’s BCM60500 and BCM60333 new PLC solutions integrate with Wi-Fi, set-top box, gateway and TV platforms to enable simultaneous multi-room HDTV distribution, low-latency real-time online 3D gaming and fast Internet coverage throughout the home, while keeping power consumption in check thanks to an efficient implementation of the MIPS32 architecture.

Lantiq demonstrates bonded VDSL + LTE with up to 300 Mbps using the MIPS-based AnyWAN SoC

After announcing the new high-performance MIPS-based XWAY VRX300 chipset for VDSL2 applications last month, Lantiq were in Taipei demonstrating their bonded VDSL and LTE technology that achieves network speeds up to 300 Mbps.

This breakthrough technology is called DSLTE™ and enables carriers to offer combined DSL and LTE access links using a MIPS-based reference design that uses Imagination’s multithreading technology to its full potential. It is a very cost effective solution which allows carriers to reuse their existing infrastructure by implementing a software-based traffic management suite running on the Lantiq GRX network processor. The XWAY GRX300 platform integrates a high-performance MIPS32 CPU in a single chip that offers the broad functionality of a state-of-the-art router or gateway.
