Last week the National Technology Awards 2018 took place in the luxurious surroundings of the Waldorf Hilton, London. The NTAs are an annual event that celebrates excellent in the industry and we are delighted to announce that Imagination’s PowerVR’s Vision & AI team has won in the category for ‘Tech Team of the Year.’
The judging panel, ranging from journalists and analysts to tech consultants and financiers, recognised the efforts of the team in creating an entirely new piece of IP for Imagination – the Series2NX neural network accelerator (NNA).
In case you’re not aware, the NNA is designed to accelerate neural networks in hardware. Neural networks are a form of machine learning that are enabling computing devices to do ever smarter things that we now increasingly taking for granted – image classification on our smartphones, voice recognition in our phones and homes, and cars learning to see. Go check out our blog post to understand in plain language more about what neural networks are and how they work.
Neural networks are therefore becoming ever more widely used and having dedicated silicon to run them means they can operate much faster than can be done in a CPU or even GPU, and thanks to our Series2NX solution, even faster than competitive dedicated hardware.
Perhaps the team’s biggest achievement was creating this IP in just 14 months, with team members located across four countries. As it was entirely new IP, the designs were essentially created from scratch and had to be custom designed with new software flows and tools.
Russell James, Vice President of the Vision & AI group at Imagination said that: “I think the team has done an outstanding job. As a collective, they have embraced the vision of what we wanted to achieve and in a very short space of time, applied themselves to create a product that our customers and the wider industry are taking serious note of. Today, Imagination has the industry-leading NNA and that is down to the skill, hard work and determination of the team.”
As consumers grow accustomed to the benefits that neural networks provide, in smartphones smartwatches, connected doorbells, connected cars and many other use cases, the demand for powerful AI hardware is only going to increase. Thanks to the hard work and dedication of the PowerVR Vision & AI team, Imagination stands ready to address the market and enable our customers to innovate with their designs and delights their own customers and end users.
It was 20 years ago today (well yesterday, strictly speaking, but close enough) that Sega released the Dreamcast onto the world in the US, with the Japanese and European launches following on later that year. While its reign was short
