Imagination’s PVRIC4 image compression tech garnered plenty of attention at the recent ICCAD China 2018 symposium, which took place on 29th and 30th November at the Zhuhai International Convention & Exhibition Centre, China. The annual event focusses on integrated circuit design and Imagination was proud to be a Gold Sponsor.
Speaking at the event, Zheng Kai, technical manager of Imagination China discussed on stage Imagination’s recently introduced PVRIC4: a key new technology for our GPUs that through visually lossless images compression delivers a guaranteed 50% system bandwidth and memory footprint reduction.
“Due to the rapid progress in technologies such as multimedia processing, mobile communication and artificial intelligence, the bandwidth of smart devices has become a key factor affecting its cost and user experience,” Kai said. “Imagination has been developing solutions that help SoC manufacturers reduce costs and power, while still protecting the end-user experience.”
Kai gave a live demonstration of PVRIC4 compression saying, “Thanks to this hybrid solution, PVRIC4 provides SoC manufacturers with the best results of two methods, with the highest fidelity to ensure graphics savings with bandwidth and frame buffer compression on video content.
Kai explained how these operations are performed in hardware and do not have any performance overhead when implemented, thus bringing added value to smart devices, optimising overall power consumption for the high-end market where memory cost pressure is reduced but boosting the mid-level and entry-level markets thanks to a guaranteed 50% memory footprint reduction that reduces the cost burden.
