The Unity High Definition Render Pipeline – PowerVR Meetup

It’s not long now until the very first PowerVR Community Meetup. This Meetup will be a fantastic opportunity to learn more about the latest developments in the mobile graphics industry, as well as meet and network with other engineers. The main event will be a talk about the Unity High Definition Render Pipeline, but they’ll be plenty of opportunity to chat and ask questions while tucking into the free food.

Our Developer Technology support team will also be on hand to provide advice on any graphics-related problems you might have.

As a bit of a taster, I caught up with Dihara Wijetunga, one of the engineers in the Developer Technology support team, to see exactly what his talk is going to be about and also what it’s like to work at Imagination.

Hi Dihara, so what’s your position at Imagination Technologies?

Hi, I’m a Graduate Developer Technology Engineer in the DevTech (Developer Technology) support team.

And what does a support engineer do on a day-to-day basis?

The general role of our team is to help developers get the best out of their applications. Most of the time these are games developers who are looking to provide a really smooth experience for players on PowerVR devices. We often spent time chatting with developers to get an idea of the performance issues with their games. We then use the powerful tools created by the DevTech team, like PVRTune, PVRTrace, and PVRCarbon to profile and analyse these games. This helps us find the root of any performance problems so we can give suggestions on how to fix them.

What are you working on at the moment?

At the moment I’m looking at how to optimise Unity.

What’s the best part of your job?

It’s great to feel like your work matters. We support games developers from across the world, so it really feels like we’re having a positive impact on the industry. Imagination is building to bigger and better things, so this impact is only going to increase.

It’s also really great fun when we get to meet developers in person. We often chat through email or over the phone, but getting some face-to-face time at industry events like GDC is very valuable to us.

What did you do before joining Imagination? And what made you want to join Imagination and DevTech?

I was working in a mobile graphics and VR startup in Sri Lanka. I was mostly working on projects involving Unity and Unreal, as well as using APIs like Vulkan and OpenGL ES.

I joined DevTech because I wanted to get into the graphics industry properly. Imagination was a great opportunity to get my foot in the door of an established name in the industry.

Give us the elevator pitch for your Meetup talk

It’s basically a deep dive into the Unity High Definition Rendering pipeline. The Unity HDR pipeline is a scriptable render pipeline which includes cool features like physically-based rendering and HDR lighting. I’ll be dissecting the pipeline, so you can understand each stage in detail. I’ll also compare it to existing pipelines, looking at the new features and their benefits. Hopefully, I can familiarise people with this pipeline, so they can feel confident when jumping right into their own Unity HDR pipeline projects.

Why should developers come to this talk?

The HDR pipeline is currently only on desktop, but Unity has said it’s coming to mobile platforms, so this talk is a great chance for mobile developers to get ahead of the curve and be prepared for when it drops.

It’s not just for mobile developers though! Anyone with an interest in Unity or games development should definitely come along. There’s also going to be free food, so I think it’s a pretty good deal.

What are the Meetup details?

It’s on the 16th January in London at The Parcel Yard. The event starts at 6:30pm with a reception. My talks begins at 7:00pm and runs until 8:00pm. After that we’ll have a quick talk about our brand new GPU architecture, the IMG A-Series, and then we’ll start dishing out the free food. This will be a chance for you to chat with us and ask any questions about the talk or any other topic really. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone there.
