KINGS LANGLEY, UK — Imagination Technologies (LSE:IMG), the leading provider of human-computer interface intellectual property (IP), and Frontier Silicon Ltd., a new fabless semiconductor company, today announced that they have signed an agreement licensing Imagination Technologies’ Digital TV and Digital Radio IP packages for use by Frontier Silicon in its silicon-on-chip (SoC) designs. The licensed technologies include Imagination Technologies’ multi-threaded META processor, PowerVR MPEG and Display Pipeline cores and Ensigma’s DVB (Digital Video Broadcast) and DAB (Digital Audio Broadcast) related IP.
Frontier Silicon is developing super-integrated chips for the next generation consumer multimedia products, with particular focus on the terrestrial Digital TV market. As the TV and radio markets transition from analogue to digital and migrate towards mass-market free-to-view terrestrial services with more choice and better quality they require highly integrated and low-cost solutions. The multi-threaded capabilities of the META DSP core, combined with complementary and efficient video, DVB and DAB IP offerings from Imagination Technologies enable Frontier Silicon to offer world-leading, cost-effective SoC solutions for these markets.
Additionally, Digital One and Imagination Technologies today announced that Frontier Silicon is licensing the manufacturing, marketing and distribution rights to the META DBX-1 design, which has already been developed under the partnership of Digital One and Imagination Technologies announced in April 2001.
Frontier Silicon will be targeting its first META based devices, the Frontier Chorus™ multimedia DSP chip, at the digital audio and DAB digital radio markets. Following this Frontier Silicon plans to deliver its highly integrated DVB-T SoC device for the digital terrestrial TV market by the end of 2002.
Frontier Silicon is a venture backed start-up led by Anthony Sethill, an executive with extensive experience in the consumer electronics marketplace. The terms of the license agreements will result in both Digital One, the UK’s only national commercial Digital Radio Network and Imagination Technologies Group plc becoming minority shareholders in the company.
