London, UK 25th February 2010: Ian Littlewood, a Sales Advisor at HBH Woolacotts in Cornwall, has won the grand prize of a luxury eco-holiday worth £2,000 in PURE’s ‘Less than a Light Bulb’* retailer reward campaign.
During the campaign period (June – Dec 2009), independent retailers saw an upturn in sales of PURE portable Energy Saving Trust radios by almost 25%. The portable digital radio market also increased by 6% in the independent channel in the same period and PURE’s ‘Less than a Light Bulb’ campaign can be seen as a major contributory factor**.
Chris Hemmerle, director of HBH Woolacotts said: “”PURE’s ‘Less than a Light Bulb’ campaign worked really well for us; the in-store POS helped focus attention on the products while the holiday promotion for the staff helped to increase sales. Ian was certainly very happy to have won the grand prize! The campaign also helped raise awareness of energy saving products which in turn boosted attachment rates with ChargePAK sales””.
Says Colin Crawford, PURE’s marketing director: “”Independent retailers are best placed to advise customers about the benefits of energy saving products and our ‘Less than a Light Bulb’ campaign for independent retailers shows that focusing on this can help boost sales as well as create opportunities for incremental sales of accessories such as ChargePAK.””
The monthly prizes in the ‘Less than a Light Bulb’ campaign were won by:
Thomas Waddington of Michael R Peters in Bedford; Angela Ford of HBH Woolacotts in Holsworthy, Devon; Lynda Pennells of Wadley in Bicester; Steven Patterson of EH Services in Belfast; Sarah Spedding of RL Brooks Ltd in Whitehaven, Cumbria; Stella Swan of Around Sound in Leicester and Andrew O’Gorman of O’Gormans Ltd, Bicester.
PURE’s Less than a Light Bulb campaign ran from June until December 2009 and encouraged sales of its Energy Saving Trust accredited radios by giving away a monthly tailor-made eco-holiday prize to participating dealers each month followed by a grand prize at the end of the year. A consumer promotion was also available, exclusively at independent dealerships who signed up to the incentive, offering consumers purchasing an Energy Saving Recommended PURE radio a chance to win a luxury eco-holiday.
PURE has received fourteen Energy Saving Recommended (ESR) accreditations for its radios including Move; EVOKE-1S; Siesta; Chronos II; Chronos iDock II; Chronos CD II; Siesta iDock; Sirocco 150; Elan II; TEMPUS-1S; ONE Mini; ONE Classic; ONE Elite; EVOKE Mio and EVOKE-2S.
All fourteen radios endorsed by the Energy Saving Trust are part of EcoPlus™, PURE’s green initiative as is PURE’s entire product range. EcoPlus™ stands for reduced power consumption, packaging materials from recycled and sustainable sources and components selected to minimise their environmental impact.

*Running four Energy Saving Recommended radios uses less electricity than one low energy light bulb on for the same time. A PURE Energy Saving Trust accredited digital radio consumes less than 3.5W of electricity in ‘on’ mode – which with three hours of listening a day (and turned off the rest of the time) would cost 60p a year on the average energy tariff; a typical low energy bulb consumes around 13-18W, which would cost £2.10 – £2.90 a year to run for the same number of hours a day on same the average energy tariff. A typical 13-18W energy saving light bulb is equivalent to a 60W incandescent (‘traditional’) bulb. ‘Average’ energy tariff is a price of 13.95p/kWh of electricity (as at Sept 2008).

About the Energy Saving Recommended scheme
Run by the Energy Saving Trust, Energy Saving Recommended (ESR) is an endorsement scheme that identifies the most energy efficient products on the market. Launched in 2000, our objective is to endorse the top 20 per cent of energy efficient products so they become easily identifiable to consumers. To gain certification a product or service must meet with a strict set of criteria, independently set and updated annually.
There are now around 3000 ESR products from over 130 manufacturers, available over 70 retailers – these include multiple, independent and online retailers.
