PowerVR Technologies a division of Imagination Technologies has today announced that it has completed development of a next generation graphics architecture for arcade systems.

The leading edge graphics technology has been developed as part of the continuing partnership between Sega, NEC Corporation and Imagination Technologies. Sega is already using the system for the development of the next generation of arcade titles, the first of which are expected to be released later this year.

The next generation arcade systems are based on the PowerVR architecture and also incorporate an advanced PowerVR co-processing engine for great game dynamics and full hardware geometry transformation and lighting (T&L), which reduces the CPU load to 1 / 10th, as well as direct and efficient support for use of multiple PowerVR rendering processors for super high performance and outstanding image quality.

Says Hossein Yassaie, CEO, Imagination Technologies: Our new work will enable Sega to create even more stunning and realistic arcade games by utilising the advanced PowerVR hardware transformation and lighting engine, together with multiple PowerVR rendering processors, while hugely benefiting from the freed up resources in the main CPU for actual game dynamics.

Says Hideki Sato, Corporate Senior Vice President, Sega Enterprises: Sega has been working with NEC and Imagination Technologies to develop a system that utilizes PowerVR’s inherent scalability, and the new associated hardware geometry and lighting engine, to deliver a new, unmatched level of gaming experience to arcades worldwide.

Says Hidetoshi Kosaka, General Manager, NEC: The relationship between NEC and Sega has been very successful. Our PowerVR 2DC graphics processor is already used in Sega’s Dreamcast console and the Naomi arcade system. We are pleased that this ongoing relationship has now entered its next phase of achievement and innovation.
