Imagination Technologies welcomes Government statement providing certainty on the digital future of broadcast in the UK

London, UK – 16 December, 2013 – Imagination Technologies (LSE: IMG) today announced its support for UK Government plans confirming that digital is the future for UK radio and providing certainty about the criteria for digital switchover.

Imagination agrees with Minister Ed Vaizey that switchover is the right course to take and that digital radio brings real benefits for listeners. Furthermore, stations can dramatically increase efficiencies by switching to all-digital transmission versus supporting dual transmission radio.

Imagination believes that a number of agreements reached today will drive digital radio to further levels of success in the UK:

  • Agreements from Government, the BBC and commercial radio to fund the expansion of local DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting) coverage over the coming years
  • Ofcom’s initiation of the licensing process for a second national DAB network, Digital Two (D2)
  • The introduction of a Digital ‘tick’ mark for radios
  • Partnership between Imagination and Frontier Silicon for a fourth generation digital radio chip
  • Partnership between Imagination and STMicroelectronics for a multi-standard programmable radio solution targeted at car radios

Sir Hossein Yassaie, CEO of Imagination Technologies, says: “Imagination Technologies took the initiative by developing the world’s first commercially affordable DAB chipset in 2002, and we are delighted to see our vision for a digital radio future progressing. The next stage of enabling digital radio is about highly integrated solutions that deliver the lowest cost and smallest form factor together with support for global digital radio standards.

“Digital radio in the home is strong through Imagination’s consumer brand Pure, as well as our ongoing partnership with Frontier Silicon. We are also enabling digital radio proliferation in automotive through a new partnership we announced today with STMicroelectronics. The next big stage is the penetration of digital radio technology into mobile devices, and our technology is ready to facilitate that. However, the market not only needs technological features, such as global standards support, low power and low cost, which we, together with our partners, can supply, it also needs certainty about the future of the digital audio broadcast market, which the Government must supply.”
