Imagination Technologies Wins Two Queen’s Awards

Technology Company Wins Enterprise Innovation and International Trade 2000

Imagination Technologies – the international company that develops, licenses and supplies market-leading 2D/3D graphics accelerator, video and audio technologies and products for PCs, games consoles, arcade entertainment machines and digital set-top boxes – has been awarded two Queen’s Awards for Enterprise 2000. The Awards are for Enterprise Innovation and International Trade and have been presented to the company’s PowerVR Technologies division.

Hossein Yassaie, CEO, Imagination Technologies, says: We are honoured to receive these Awards, which constitute an important endorsement of our hard-work and achievement as a company. Winning Awards for both Innovation and International Trade clearly recognises the company’s capability and accomplishment in both creation of leading edge technologies and their successful marketing.

Enterprise Innovation 2000
PowerVR Technologies wins the Innovation Award for the design of silicon chips for 3D graphics. The unique PowerVR graphics technology is licensed by international partners including NEC and STMicroelectronics and is used in Sega’s latest video games console, Dreamcast; the Naomi arcade system, which is used in the majority of new arcade machines worldwide; by numerous PC add-in and OEM customers and in the next-generation of set-top-boxes.

International Trade 2000
The company also wins the award for International Trade because all its earnings come from IP (intellectual property) licensing agreements with the world’s leading semiconductor companies in the USA, Europe and Japan which manufacture silicon chips utilising the Division’s designs. PowerVR Technologies designs 2D and 3D graphics technologies for use across a wide variety of consumer platforms such as games consoles, arcade machines and personal computers.

The PowerVR approach to 3D graphics starts from the premise that taking a different algorithmic approach to 3D processing can eliminate all redundant processing and memory bottlenecks. This revolutionary approach keeps as much processing as possible on-chip minimising costly accesses to off chip memory and improving performance. This unique technique of tile-based deferred texturing has been successfully patented worldwide.

Other Awards Company of the Year and Millennium Products
Imagination Technologies also recently won the title of Company Of The Year in the prestigious PLC Awards 1999, which were sponsored by PricewaterhouseCoopers in association with The London Stock Exchange and the Financial Times.

Imagination Technologies’ success is built on a strategy of developing and licensing ground-breaking technology that exploits the potential for interface between the human and computer. Since it was founded in 1985, Imagination Technologies has introduced, via licensing arrangements or directly, a succession of innovative technologies, silicon chips and add-in boards, which have played a major role in the development of multimedia and computer-based entertainment systems.

Imagination Technologies comprises three divisions. Ensigma Technologies develops and licenses speech and audio processing algorithms and technologies for DSP (digital signal processing) in the consumer and telecommunications markets; PowerVR Technologies develops and markets the unique PowerVR graphics/video technology; and VideoLogic Systems produces a range of innovative and award winning products in the areas of 2D/3D graphics and sound acceleration, home audio systems, electronic music, DVD, digital entertainment, video-capture and video-conferencing. PowerVR Technologies’ PowerVR design and VideoLogic’s Sirocco speaker system were both recently awarded Millennium Products status by the Design Council after Prime Minister Tony Blair challenged businesses to show that Britain is the creative powerhouse of the world.
