META™ Processor Core Enables the First £99 DAB Digital Radio

London, 1st July 2002: Metagence Technologies – a division of Imagination Technologies (LSE:IMG) – today announced that its META super-threaded IP processor core is being used in the PURE EVOKE-1 DAB digital radio from VideoLogic Systems. The EVOKE-1 is the first £99.99 (inc. VAT) DAB radio. At this price point the superb sound quality of DAB digital radio is finally accessible to the mainstream of UK consumers.

The PURE EVOKE-1 is built around Frontier Silicon’s Chorus™ FS1010, a single-chip DAB/Audio processor based on the META processor design licensed from Imagination Technologies. META super-threading technology enables VideoLogic to create a lower cost DAB radio that also increases on the features available in previous generation DAB products.

The Frontier Chorus FS1010 utilises the revolutionary META multi-threaded DSP core to provide multiple real-time programming contexts (threads) that can operate independently and concurrently. The critical advantage of the META architecture is that it makes it possible to run several real-time tasks on a single processor, rather than resorting to inefficient multi-DSP solutions. META can implement all DAB baseband and user interface functions on one device. EVOKE-1 also uses DAB IP technologies developed by Imagination Technologies’ Ensigma Technologies division.

Says David McBrien, VP Business Development, Metagence Technologies: “”;Using a combination of META and Ensigma’s DAB IP is the most efficient way to create low-cost, low power consumption DAB digital radios. DAB decode typically requires less than 30% of the resources of a 150MHz META DSP leaving enough overhead in the multi-threaded processor to run other tasks including advanced user-interfaces and, if required, other concurrent data or multimedia processing.””;
