London, UK, 5th August 2008: The Energy Saving Trust has described how much energy is saved by listening to DAB through an ESR (Energy Saving Recommended) accredited PURE EcoPlus digital radio versus other ways of listening.
According to the Energy Saving Trust an ESR accredited PURE EcoPlus digital radio uses, on average, around 5 times less energy than listening to the radio through a laptop, 20 times less energy than listening through a desktop computer* and 40 times less energy than listening to the radio through a TV with a Freeview set-top box**.
Colin Crawford, PURE’s director of marketing says: “”17.8% of all radio listening is digital and 5.3% of digital listening is via the internet and digital TV***. While we are delighted that people are enjoying the fantastic content that digital radio provides, we would like to encourage them to move across to listening on an Energy Saving Recommended radio which has less environmental impact and higher energy saving.””
PURE has received seven Energy Saving Recommended (ESR) accreditations for its radios including Move; EVOKE-1S; Siesta; Chronos II; TEMPUS-1S; ONE Mini; and the forthcoming ONE Elite.
Products endorsed by the scheme have to satisfy an Independent Endorsement Panel of experts, and have to meet strict energy efficiency criteria which means they are not only better for the environment but are also cheaper to run. All PURE radios endorsed by ESR will feature a special Energy Saving Recommended logo on their packaging and promotional material.
All seven radios endorsed by the Energy Saving Trust are part of PURE’s EcoPlus™ range: a growing series of fifteen products with reduced power consumption, packaging materials from recycled and sustainable sources and components selected to minimise their environmental impact.

Products within PURE’s EcoPlus range have reduced power consumption both in use and in standby. Both standby and active power consumption are significantly lower than the industry average*. All EcoPlus product packaging shares a consistent look and feel with a memorable EcoPlus logo and an eye-catching tree motif. They also clearly show in a graphical form, the product’s standby and operational power compared to the industry average.
EcoPlus products are packaged using cardboard produced with a minimum of 70% recycled material, and finished using water-based varnish. Internal pulp trays are 100% recycled, and the user documentation is printed on 100% recycled paper using soya-based inks. Packaging size has also been optimised to reduce the materials used and minimise the environmental cost of transport.
PURE’s portable radios are compatible with the optional ChargePAK rechargeable battery pack. These battery packs are more cost-effective and convenient and avoid the need for alkaline batteries to put in landfill sites. PURE radios also conform to the RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) standard. PURE supports the WEEE directive to reduce electrical waste. About the Energy Saving Trust
The Energy Saving Trust is one of the UK’s leading organisations set up to mitigate the damaging effects of climate change. It aims to cut carbon dioxide emissions – the main greenhouse gas causing climate change – by promoting the sustainable and efficient use of energy. It is the independent organisation providing advice for people to help reduce their energy use and acts as a bridge between government, consumers, trade, businesses, local authorities and the energy market. It provides impartial information and advice and has a network of advice centres in the UK specifically designed to help consumers take action to save energy. About the Energy Saving Recommended scheme
Run by the Energy Saving Trust, Energy Saving Recommended (ESR) is an endorsement scheme that identifies the most energy efficient products on the market. Launched in 2000, our objective is to endorse the top 20 per cent of energy efficient products so they become easily identifiable to consumers. To gain certification a product or service must meet with a strict set of criteria, independently set and updated annually. There are now around 3000 ESR products from over 130 manufacturers, available over 70 retailers – these include multiple, independent and online retailers.
