Imagination Technologies, the leading provider of human computer interface intellectual property (IP), and its patent licensing partner, Scipher plc, the technology development and licensing company, today announce that Scipher’s patent licensing business, QED Intellectual Property Limited, has granted a licence to Hauppauge Incorporated to use multimedia patents owned by Imagination Technologies Group plc.
The technology covered by the patents enables television to be watched on a PC. Hauppauge’s flagship product, the WinTV family, is the leading branded TV card in the worldwide retail market. Hauppauge is the first board manufacturer to license Imagination Technologies patents – the other licensees are tuner manufacturers.
The licensing agreement with Hauppauge follows on from Scipher’s successful licensing of the same patents to tuner manufacturers Temic Telefunken, Microtune, Philips Electronics and Samsung. Together these companies and their customers represent the majority of the world market for PC-TV tuner technology. The licensing agreements with these companies are delivering royalties for Imagination Technologies and for Scipher that is expected to last for several years.
Dr Ken Gray, Chairman of Scipher said: ”We are extremely pleased to have again licensed Imagination Technologies’ PC-TV tuner patents – this time to Hauppauge. This again demonstrates the significant commercial benefit that can be achieved through a proactive approach to patent licensing.”
Hossein Yassaie, CEO of Imagination Technologies commented: “”;We are delighted with the relationship we have with Scipher and look forward to further successes with the intellectual property that they are licensing on our behalf.””;
Imagination Technologies appointed Scipher to exploit its PC-TV patents in 1999. This relationship has since been extended with patents covering multimedia architectures relevant to PCs, set-top-boxes, game consoles and other multimedia systems.
