VideoLogic PowerVR Used in Next Generation Set-top Box Development Platform

VideoLogic the international company that develops, designs and supplies market-leading 2D/3D graphics, video and audio technologies and products today said that its PowerVR 3D graphics technology will be used in the next generation Microsoft TV set-top box development platform from STMicroelectronics (ST).

Code named Orion-HD1, the new set-top box development platform was announced by STMicroelectronics on June 14th and is already being delivered to major OEMs developing next generation set-top boxes and applications. The Orion-HD1, running under Microsoft TV and Sun Java, delivers cinema quality audio and video for digital TV and high quality 2D/3D graphics capabilities for next generation interactive 3D gaming and internet applications.

The first Orion-HD1 implementation will support a PowerVR Series2 PCI graphics processor. Future implementations of the Orion Platform will include PowerVR Series3 graphics processors.

The world-wide market for digital set-top boxes in 1997 was 6.4 million units. This is forecast to grow to 51.8 million units by year 2005 according to Strategy Analytics. STMicroelectronics’ target markets for the Orion Platform are worldwide and support digital Set-top box standards including OpenCable, US ATSC and Japan BS4. The platform supports both HDTV (High Definition TV) and SDTV (Standard Definition TV) formats.

This is a major milestone to our objective of making PowerVR the graphics technology of choice in the emerging consumer platforms.

PowerVR’s unique tile based rendering approach and on-chip Z buffer function drastically reduces memory bandwidth leading to a scalable and significantly lower cost graphics solution compared to all traditional 3D approaches.

ST’s Orion-HD1 platform and range of devices for set-top boxes will provide an excellent hardware platform for Microsoft TV, said Alan Yates, Director Platform Marketing, Microsoft.
