WildVerse poetry competition winners announced

PURE encourages budding poets

London, UK 21st October 2010: PURE – the world-leading radio maker – is pleased to announce the winners of the WildVerse poetry competition, which was launched earlier this year in conjunction with the RSPB Wildlife Explorers, Fun Kids radio station, and Reading for Life.

Children and young people ‘aged up to 19’ were invited to submit ‘wild poems’ which could be about a bug, a bird, a tree or any kind of wildlife.

Winning entries were selected by Anthony Browne, the current Children’s Laureate, and will be read out on Fun Kids radio station between the 23rd and 31st of October by the Fun Kids storyteller.

Peter, age five from St Albans, was the overall winner in the under eights category with his onomatapaeic poem about cows, pigeons and bees, while Rebecca, age 15 from Chatham, won the over eights category with her poem entitled ‘Wind’. Both these main winners will receive a PURE Sensia internet-connected digital radio with colour touchscreen.

Runners up in the under eights category included: ‘The Forest’ by Catriona Stewart; ‘Birds in my Garden’ by Jacob Fenwick, ‘Rock Pools in Devon’ by Adam May and ‘Birds on Budle Bay’ by Harry Banks. The over eights category runners up were made up of: ‘Aranea (Spider)’ by Evie Maidment; ‘Mother Swallow’ by Amelia Maddox; ‘The Heron’ by Robert Blythe and ‘Here we go again’ by Kirsty McKechnie. All runners up will receive a PURE EVOKE Flow internet-connected digital radio.

Says Anthony Browne, Children’s Laureate: “I was extremely impressed by the standard of entries into the WildVerse poetry competition and it was incredibly hard to pick a winner. It’s fantastic that organisations such as PURE, the RSPB and Fun Kids are encouraging children to discover and love poetry and the added bonus of the winners having their poems read out on the radio is a great way to get more children involved and interested in having a go at poetry themselves.”

To listen to the winning poems, please visit or listen to Fun Kids between the 23rd and 31st of October.
