PowerVR Furian architecture is a new architecture for embedded GPUs, the successor to the industry-leading PowerVR Rogue architecture. The new architecture brings about a large number of completely changed blocks for improved performance, power and density. It encompasses the significant improvements made to Rogue architecture throughout its life span. The first cores utilising this new architecture are the PowerVR Series8XT cores, which will be announced throughout 2017.

The PowerVR Furian architecture is designed to maintain and widen the performance/mW gap over competing solutions. It is a scalable architecture designed to meet a wide variety of market segments and applications, over multiple generations of products. It ensures ease of implementation, being specifically designed for ease of layout, including support for new sub-14nm process geometries.

The Furian architecture is also designed to scale efficiently to the higher performance points required for applications such as AR and VR. It does this in a manner that mitigates performance density issues which are seen in some competing solutions.

As process nodes continue to shrink, it is important that the architecture can be efficiently laid out, especially as the design scales to higher performance levels. We have made changes from Rogue to Furian to ensure shorter path lengths with less congestion:

Furian Architecture

Some of the most significant changes have been made in the ALU. These have enabled both an increase in real world performance as well as improving the density. By moving from an x16 to x32 pipeline, the performance is doubled. The specialised ALU pipelines are kept independent from the primary ALU pipes, to prevent contention issues reducing performance.

By creating a scalable, feature rich, power and performance dense architecture, the new PowerVR Furian architecture will power generations of cores. These cores will enable PowerVR to continue leadership in its existing markets such as mobile, tablets and automotive, and also create leading positions in new markets such as AR and& VR.
