With each new IEEE 802.11 Wi-Fi standard data throughput has been improved to deal with the ever-increasing demand from new applications and the latest variant, IEEE 802.11ax, now known as Wi-Fi 6, continues this trend. Along with greater throughput, it also introduces new features that enable it to perform much more efficiently and robustly in dense environments, resulting in a much greater usable performance for end-users.
However, for low-power, low-data-rate, battery-operated applications, other wireless standards have been preferred, as Wi-Fi traditionally has been considered to be less power efficient. Wi-Fi 6 is designed to address this problem.
