Automotive (ADAS)

Vehicles are going through radical changes with a move to all-digital designs featuring multiple high-resolution displays. With the PowerVR Series8XT family, designs will be able to support sustained frame-rates at 60fps across multiple feeds to support dashboard cluster, HUD, infotainment and ADAS systems, whilst using only one GPU, thus saving on cost and power.

The two-cluster PowerVR GT8525 delivers improvements in sustained gaming performance within constrained power footprints, including for mobile AR. It enables greater compute availability, such as neural networks for object identification. The four-cluster PowerVR GT8540 will deliver a premium, high-end graphics experience, while still offering industry-leading battery life.

Targeting high-performance SoCs

To deliver the ever-more immersive experience that consumers are demanding, the Series8XT provides the high resolution and high sustained frame rate graphics required for standalone AR and VR headsets. With devices based on the GT8525, OEMs can offer high-performance graphics and compute, while staying area-efficient, while the GT8540 is the preferred choice for those looking to create a no-compromise AR/VR experience.

Designed for low-power and cost efficiency

PowerVR Series8XT’s improvements over the previous generation stem from several new enhancements. These include – a 32-lane wide ALU, delivering twice the throughput per clock over the last generation; multi-threaded local memory access, which helps removes the stalls in internal data access; and a dedicated cache for texture unit, providing higher throughput efficiency with lower power consumption.

Performance per milliwatt

Vehicles becoming mobile computing platforms is placing pressure on the overall in-car power budget. Keeping heat levels in check to ensure sustained performance, irrespective of environmental conditions is critical for automotive products. The design ethos of the PowerVR Series8XT of maximising performance per milliwatt makes it a perfect fit for automotive OEMs.

Multi high-resolution displays

Manufacturers are increasing the amount of display real-estate in the car every year, and with double the pixels per clock of the previous generation, the PowerVR GT8525 can typically drive up to three 4K displays at up to 60fps, while the four-cluster PowerVR GT8540 can drive up to six 4K screens at up to 60fps.

Virtualization​

As the car becomes a connected gateway, car manufacturers are looking to deploy services directly to the car. With built-in hardware virtualization, the PowerVR Series8XT cores can provide car manufacturers with the confidence to deploy these value-added services in a secure manner through isolation of different workloads in the system, including on the GPU.

Software and tools support

PowerVR Series8XT offers support for all the latest APIs, including OpenGL ES 3.2, Vulkan 1.0, OpenCL 2.0*, Renderscript and the Android NN HAL. In addition, Imagination provides developers with free access to the cross-platform PowerVR SDK, designed to support all aspects of 3D graphics application development; as well as tools and utilities that ease development of 3D graphics and GPU compute applications.

Workload flexibility​

The ability to isolate long-running compute workloads on a single Shader Processing Unit (SPU) in the four-cluster PowerVR GT8540 provides car OEMs with greater flexibility in how they design their workloads. It offers the ability to run ADAS functions on one SPU, while other tasks such as infotainment and cluster can be run on the second, using prioritising mechanisms to ensure performance targets are reached.

Smarter GPUs for intelligent products

The PowerVR Series2NX neural network accelerator (NNA) is a standalone AI solution, but it also makes an ideal partner for the Series9 GPUs. Combined, they enable the deployment of low-power AI-ready SoCs within a minimal silicon area. The GPU manages classic vision algorithms, while the neural net processing is performed on the PowerVR NNA – and all within the same silicon footprint as competing standalone GPUs.
